Radiant Barrier Insulation
Maybe the most important property of radiant barrier insulation is the fact that it has a reflective surface. This surface usually consists of either an aluminum foil or a sheet. The installation can be done either in a house which is being built or in one that has already been built. It really doesn’t matter.
The important thing to know here is the fact that the reflective side of the barrier must face an open area and the installation can be done quite easily by placing the reflective sheets on top of the already existing insulation.
Now here is the trick: you must make sure that the reflective side of the barrier faces up, but also make sure that the barrier doesn’t touch the insulation. The reasoning behind it is this: if the sheet somehow touches the insulation, the heat will be transferred from the barrier to the insulation. This in turn leads to more heat accumulating in summer time and getting out of the house in winter time.
Besides installing the barrier in your attic, you can also place it in the walls of the house. This must be done when the home is being built as part of your home insulation project, for obvious reasons. Another thing that you must do is to make sure that the R-value of your insulation corresponds with the recommended value from your region. This will help you get the best out of your insulation and will make your house much more energy efficient.
